SPOFFORD MILLS, INC SWIMMING POOL
Summer Time-1934
The Spofford Mills Swimming Pool was opened in 1934 to provide recreation for the
employees and families and especially for the children. The pool was filled by water
from an artesian well, referred to by the residents of the "Mill Hill" as the "Spring." The
water from the well was especially good, and the citizens of Wilmington came and filled
their water jugs, when there was a severe drought in the late 1930s. The location of the
mill property was originally known as Mineral Springs, and was the site where
Confederate soldiers camped during the War between the States. (The Webmaster,
